A military-access beach break on Camp Lejeune's coastline, Onslow Beach delivers low-crowd sessions that most East Coast breaks can't match. It needs a legitimate swell push to fire: hurricane swells and nor'easters are the sweet spot, with 3-8ft the workable range. On small summer days the bars are forgettable and rides stay short, but when a real storm organizes the sandbanks you'll find long, uncrowded walls with essentially no one out. Crowd pressure is minimal on weekdays and light on weekends, though the tight-knit local group earns respect. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through fall for hurricane swells, winter nor'easters. Consistency: low to moderate, swell-dependent. Access requires a military base pass at the Camp Lejeune gate, and be prepared for a vehicle search. During hurricanes, lifeguards control access aggressively and may redirect surfers to paddle from alternate staging areas.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the emptiest lineups on the North Carolina coast by default, gated behind a military base. The resident surf community is small and established. Give respect, don't act like you own a place you had to apply to enter, and the vibe stays easy. Lifeguards hold real authority here and will enforce surf zones and timing.

Access & Facilities

Take Hwy 172 onto Camp Lejeune and follow signs to the beach. A base access pass is required and vehicle searches happen at the gate. During heavy swell events, bridge access may be blocked by lifeguards. No public amenities. Pack everything you need including water and food.

Nearby Alternatives

When Onslow is flat or locked down, Topsail Island is the nearest option though locals note it's a similar tier of wave. OBX to the north and Wrightsville Beach to the south are the go-to upgrades when real swell is running and you want better-shaped breaks.
