Consistent sandbars anchor this North Carolina Outer Banks pier break, sitting north of the 1,000-foot concrete Jennette's Pier in Nags Head. Best on SE or NE swell with SW or W winds, low to mid tide, at head-high to a couple feet overhead. The sand here holds its shape better than most Outer Banks beaches because the pier disrupts the sediment movement that beach replenishment cycles typically disrupt further south. All skill levels can find something, though intermediate surfers will get the most out of it when the banks are stacking up and offering clean lefts and rights off the peaks. Bottom: sand with scattered old pilings. Season: fall. Consistency: above average for the region. Watch for fish hooks in the water and the buried remnants of the original wood pier underfoot, especially when walking the shallows at low tide.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup is generally mellow and the vibe welcoming. Can get a bit territorial when it's actually good and crowds concentrate around the better bank, but hostility is rare. The pier hosts the WRV OBX Pro and ESA Easterns in September, so expect heavier crowds around those contest windows. Dawn patrol during contest weekends is the obvious move.

Access & Facilities

Parking at the pier lot is easy most days but fills on summer weekends. Overflow at E Gulfstream and E Gray Eagle street accesses on either side. The pier itself has a tackle shop and restrooms. Water quality is clean. No long walk required.

Nearby Alternatives

When Jennette's isn't stacking, check the peaks around the Avalon and Kitty Hawk Pier to the north, or head south toward Oregon Inlet where the swell energy tends to be bigger and the sandbars more dynamic. Cape Hatteras offers more exposed beachbreak options when NE swells are running with size.
