A south-facing sandbar on the Outer Banks that flips between forgettable mush and surprisingly powerful walls without much warning. Located near the former Cape Hatteras Pier site in Frisco, NC, it sits protected from N/NE energy and goes offshore in northerly winds. S and SSW swells are the target, ideally head-high to overhead-plus at low to mid tide, when the hard-packed sandbar can transform soft peaks into fast, punchy walls. The break suits all skill levels when conditions are mild, but the speed and current demand respect as size climbs. Bottom: sand with leftover pier pilings. Season: late summer through winter, driven by tropical cyclones and nor'easters. Consistency: fickle enough to earn the nickname "Frisco Disco" for the number of fruitless check-its it inspires. Locals cite sharks as the primary hazard, remnant pilings on the bottom are a secondary concern worth keeping in mind.

Sharks are the main one. There still might be a few pieces of the pier down there on the bottom so be weary of that.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see a mellow lineup with few surfers, weekends draw moderate crowds, especially if there's any swell running. Localism is described as doable, and when the sandbar cooperates and peaks spread out, territorial pressure stays low. The break's fickle nature naturally self-selects: only those willing to gamble on a drive tend to show up.

Access & Facilities

The pier itself is gone, but the parking lot remains. Navigate south past the Hatteras Lighthouse toward the Frisco Pier sign. Water quality is generally clean except immediately after storms. No surf rentals on-site. Buxton is the nearest town for supplies.

Nearby Alternatives

When Frisco is doing its disco spin, the stretch near the old airstrip and up toward the point can produce cleaner peaks on south swells with north wind. Cape Hatteras itself picks up more NE energy if a nor'easter is running and you want something more reliable.
