Cape Hatteras Lighthouse delivers one of the East Coast's most consistent and powerful beach break experiences, anchored by the barreling lefts at First Groin and the sweeping rights at Third Groin on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The First Groin is the main draw, producing heavy, occasionally long barrel sections on NE swells marching down the coast. NW and even NNW winds clean it up, which conveniently aligns with classic nor'easter setups. Third Groin fires on solid S or SE swells with heavy sweeping rights, while the peaks between the groins offer shorter-lived but worthwhile rides. Skill requirements vary: the First and Third peaks are advanced terrain, but the cove between grades down to beginner-friendly. Storm dependency is the reality here, tropical cyclones in late summer and fall, nor'easters and frontal swells in late fall and winter. Bottom is a mix of sand, rock, and submerged groin debris. Watch the southward conveyor current on big NE days. It spreads the crowd but also burns your shoulders fast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is real and rated heavy. A tight-knit local crew surfs this break consistently, and on good days visiting surfers arrive from well outside the region. Humility and respect are not optional here, they are the price of entry. Dawn patrol on weekdays outside peak season is your best shot at a workable lineup.

Access & Facilities

Parking lots sit at the historic Lighthouse site and fill fast on swell days. Water quality is rated fair. Contamination from a former Navy base was a known issue, with partial remediation completed in 2024 to 2025. Primary hazard is submerged jetty debris on the bottom. Booties are worth considering.

Nearby Alternatives

The Outer Banks offers numerous sandbars and beach peaks along Highway 12 that pick up similar NE and SE swell. When Hatteras is too crowded or the current is unworkable, exploring the stretch north toward Rodanthe or south toward Ocracoke can turn up quieter, comparable peaks.
