A beach break pier setup on the southern edge of North Carolina's Cape Fear coastline, Alabama Avenue sits right at the border of Kure Beach and Carolina Beach. Fun, peeling waves form off the outflow pipe on the right S or SE swell, and the crowd here runs noticeably mellower than at more popular nearby spots. Best surfed at low to mid tide, chest-high to overhead, with a W wind cleaning up the face. Works across a wide skill range, from novice to experienced shortboarders. Bottom: Sand. Season: Late summer tropical cyclones, fall hurricane groundswells, frontal systems fall through spring. Consistency: Storm dependent. Water quality is fair under normal conditions but degrades quickly after heavy rain or a hurricane, so check local reports before paddling out near the Cape Fear River outflow. Shoulder burn is manageable but south swells can generate current, so keep a bead on your position in the lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

One of the calmer lineups in the Cape Fear stretch. Locals are welcoming and the vibe stays mellow even on better swells. If you're coming from congested Carolina Beach, this is a reasonable alternative with less pressure in the water. Dawn patrol or off-peak weekday sessions keep it even quieter.

Access & Facilities

Paid parking is available at the avenue access. The spot sits directly south of Carolina Beach, easy to find on the town border. Water quality is generally fair but take the Cape Fear River proximity seriously: after significant rain or storm systems, bacteria levels can spike. Check local advisories before getting in the water.

Nearby Alternatives

Carolina Beach to the north picks up similar swell with more peak options but draws bigger crowds. Fort Fisher to the south offers a less trafficked stretch of beach break that can turn on during larger swells.
