A raw freshwater reef break on Lake Superior's north shore, The Zoo punches well above its weight for a landlocked surf scene. Located just outside Marquette, Michigan at Presque Isle Park, it needs a solid Lake Superior fetch to fire, coming alive around 5-6ft and holding shape into double overhead and beyond. A NW to N wind swell is the engine here, and the wave works across all tides. Crowds are rarely a concern, but the lineup rewards surfers who know the jump-in and can read the rocky bottom. Bottom: reef/rocky. Season: late fall through early spring. Consistency: low to moderate, swell-dependent. The standout hazard is a large submerged boulder roughly 50m offshore, known locally as the Widow-maker, positioned just north of where the man-placed rock meets the sandstone shelf. Give it a wide berth until you know the layout. Best approach is to follow a local out your first session rather than freestyling the entry.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The Zoo draws few surfers even on weekends, a function of cold water, remote geography, and a lineup that filters out anyone unprepared for the conditions. The local crew is tight-knit. Show respect, read the scene before paddling out, and follow someone to the correct entry point rather than improvising.

Access & Facilities

Head north from Marquette on Lake Shore Drive to Presque Isle Park, bear left at the fork, and park at the pavilion. The jump-in spot requires local knowledge. Water temps run brutally cold in fall and winter, so a 5/4 with hood and booties is non-negotiable for most of the season. No surf rentals on site.

Nearby Alternatives

Marquette's broader Lake Superior coastline offers several other exposed points and beach sections that pick up similar NW swells. When The Zoo is too small or blown out, check other exposed stretches of the Upper Peninsula shoreline for a cleaner angle or a more protected setup.
