A fast, powerful beach break on New Zealand's South Island, Brighton Beach sits roughly 15km south of Dunedin and delivers short, punchy walls when the swell lines up. It favors solid S to SE swells with a NW to W offshore, and tends to be at its best somewhere in the 3-6ft range. The lineup stays remarkably quiet by any standard, but locals have the wave completely dialed and visitors will find the pecking order real even with only a handful of people out. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through winter (Apr-Sep) for most consistent swell. Consistency: moderate. Check St Kilda or St Clair in Dunedin first: if those are pumping, Brighton is worth the 20-minute drive south because conditions tend to run parallel, often with nobody else around.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The beach runs empty during the week and stays light on weekends, but the small crew of locals who surf here regularly have every section mapped. They are not aggressive, but wave priority is earned, not assumed. Observe, wait your turn, and the session will go fine. Visiting surfers who paddle straight to the peak will have a rough time.

Access & Facilities

Drive south from Dunedin on Brighton Road, roughly 20 minutes. Facilities are minimal: a small parking area, no rentals, no consistent food nearby. Bring your own water. The paddle-out is straightforward, a channel forms near a small rocky island that makes entry easier than a direct beach punch. Water is cold year-round, plan accordingly.

Nearby Alternatives

St Clair and St Kilda in Dunedin are the benchmark checks before committing to Brighton. If both are flat, Brighton will be flat. Closer to Dunedin, Lawyers Head offers a different angle on the same swell window.
