Storm-driven lake peaks break along a sandbar-lined stretch of Lake Michigan's eastern shore, giving inland surfers a window into freshwater wave riding when the Great Lakes deliver. North Beach picks up NW through SW wind-swell generated by storm systems tracking across the lake, working best at 3-5ft, low to mid tide, with a short-to-moderate ride length on good days. The wave character is fun rather than powerful: expect sloping, punchy peaks with occasional ledgier sections, though barrels are rare. It suits beginners and intermediates with the waves and experienced surfers looking for a mellow session between systems. Bottom: sand. Season: fall and winter storm season. Consistency: fickle, storm-dependent. Water temperature swings dramatically with season, dropping well below 10°C in winter, so check conditions before loading the car and always bring a full suit.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Few surfers on weekdays and weekends alike. On sunny summer days the beach draws a few hundred beachgoers, but most are swimmers, skimboarders, and tourists from as far as Illinois. The surf crowd is small and the locals are generally welcoming. No meaningful localism pressure.

Access & Facilities

Take I-94 to M-43 into South Haven, cross the harbor bridge, turn left, and follow signs to North Beach Public Access. Summer parking costs $5. Snack stands are on the beach but overpriced, grab food in town or pack your own. No lifeguards, strong undertow reported, always surf with a buddy. A public skatepark sits on South Beach on the opposite side of the pier if conditions are flat.

Nearby Alternatives

If North Beach is flat, the South Beach side of the pier occasionally picks up a different angle. For more consistent Great Lakes surf, St. Joseph to the south and Saugatuck to the north are worth checking when storm tracks align.
