A groyne-anchored beach break on the outskirts of Perth, City Beach produces short, punchy peaks that shift with the seasons: sand banks up on the south side of the groyne in summer and flips to the north in winter. Works on the Fremantle Doctor, the strong SW afternoon sea breeze that kills most Perth breaks, making it a reliable arvo option when everywhere else goes onshore. Swell from the NW to SW gets past Rottnest Island in a reduced state, so expect the face to be roughly half the open-ocean size. Best in the 2-4ft range, occasionally holding to 6ft. Intermediate surfers will enjoy the fast, hollow sections, beginners should time visits carefully around lifeguard flags and swimmer zones. Bottom: sand over groyne structure. Season: autumn through spring for best swell. Consistency: moderate, swell-shadow dependent. Park in the upper car park only to avoid infringement notices.
Weekends get ultra-crowded, particularly in summer. Lifeguards enforce swimmer flags strictly, so surfers sometimes have to wait or body surf until the zones are cleared. Localism is present but not extreme. Dawn patrol or weekday sessions are noticeably quieter. Respect the swimmer exclusion zones or expect friction with the lifeguards.
Good facilities at City Beach including car parks, toilets, and food nearby. Upper car park only if you want to avoid parking fines. The light on the end of the pier makes night surfing a legitimate option when conditions align. Watch the rocks at the groyne on takeoff, especially at lower tides.
When City Beach is blown out or too crowded, Trigg Point and Scarborough offer nearby options along the same stretch of coast. On bigger NW swells, checking breaks north of Perth may produce less Rottnest shadow and more size.
