A long beachbreak split by the Benalmádena port, Playa de la Carihuela delivers some of the more consistent Mediterranean surf along Spain's Alboran coast. E to S swells are the window, with E swell generally producing the best shape. Offshore winds come from the east, which creates an unusual setup where the swell and offshore can align cleanly but only in specific patterns. Best at 2-5ft, though it can handle up to 8ft before closing out. The northern stretch typically throws up better-defined peaks. This is a year-round tourist and residential beach, so expect crowds in the lineup and shoulder-to-shoulder sunbeds on the sand. Bottom: sand. Season: E swell events October through March are most reliable. Consistency: medium. Bring a board that can generate speed on softer Mediterranean walls, and be aware that jellyfish and pollution from the adjacent commercial zone are recurring issues rather than rare exceptions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowded year-round, not just in summer. Malaga-area surfers treat this as a regular spot, and tourist volumes add extra pressure from June to September. Some localism is present. Dawn patrol or late-afternoon sessions in the shoulder months (October, November, March) give you the best chance of a less competitive lineup.

Access & Facilities

Street parking is scarce and paid, plan to walk from wherever you can find a space. The beachfront is fully urbanised with hotels, restaurants, and shops nearby, so food and water are easy to find. No dedicated surf facilities on the beach. Pollution from commercial activity is a documented concern. Jellyfish are a seasonal hazard, especially late summer.

Nearby Alternatives

If Carihuela is blown out or overcrowded, the stretch south toward Fuengirola picks up similar E to S swell and can offer quieter peaks. Further east toward Málaga city, the port-influenced spots can shape up on solid E swells when this beach is maxing out.
