A beginner-friendly beach break on the Costa del Sol, Fuengirola sits roughly 15 km west of Málaga in the sheltered Alboran Sea, where consistent swell is a genuine challenge. The spot picks up short-period E and SE wind swells, particularly levante conditions, which can push enough energy into the beach to make it rideable when most of the Costa is flat. Optimal size is under 3ft, and it rarely holds anything bigger with quality. Weekends bring town crowds to the beach and the lineup fills quickly even when surf is marginal. This is a learner wave first and foremost, suited to beginners working on pop-ups and trim. Bottom: sand. Season: Nov to Feb. Consistency: low. Bring a longboard or foamie on small days, and adjust expectations if you are an experienced surfer chasing performance surf.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are quiet with few surfers in the water. Weekends draw a mixed crowd from Málaga and the surrounding coast towns. No notable localism reported, but the town beach setting means non-surfers share the water. Give way to swimmers and stay aware of beach flags.

Access & Facilities

Fuengirola is accessible by car off the A-7 coastal highway or by commuter train from Málaga city centre, making it one of the more accessible surf checks on the Costa. Street parking is available. Full town infrastructure nearby: cafes, restaurants, and surf shops in the area. No serious hazards beyond the occasional close-out and beach swimmers.

Nearby Alternatives

When Fuengirola is flat, check Puerto Marina to the east, which can occasionally work on levante. Experienced surfers should look west toward Tarifa on the Atlantic side of the Strait of Gibraltar, where consistent Atlantic and Mediterranean swells produce far more powerful conditions.
