A fast, hollow breakwater wave peeling off a concrete pier in Port Elizabeth's Humewood Beach, this spot punches well above its size when conditions align. SW to SE swells from 2-6ft, combined with a light NW or W offshore wind, produce short but intense tube sections that jack hard off the pillar structure. Works across all tides, though higher water tends to fatten the wave while lower tide sharpens the suck. Best suited to intermediate through advanced surfers who can handle the speed and the concrete not far beneath. Bottom: reef/concrete structure. Season: April through September. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Crowds stay low even on weekends, but when it switches on between the first and third pillars, word travels fast, so arrive early to claim your slot in the rotation before the pack assembles.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions typically draw only a handful of surfers. Weekends are slightly busier but still manageable compared to other PE spots. When it's genuinely firing, a small pack assembles quickly. Give respect in the lineup and take your turns, especially around the pillar impact zone where right-of-way matters.

Access & Facilities

Drive Marine Drive until the six large concrete pillars extending from the beach are visible. Parking sits above the road. Humewood has full beach amenities nearby: toilets, parking, and several food spots within easy reach. Be aware of the hard concrete structure when paddling in or out, particularly on larger swells. Watch for rips alongside the pier.

Nearby Alternatives

When Humewood Pier is too small or the wind is wrong, nearby Pollock Beach and the main Humewood beachbreak offer more forgiving peaks for all conditions. King's Beach further along the bay can also provide shelter from dominant swell directions when the pier is maxed out.
