A submerged reef break tucked along the Schoenmakerskop road outside Port Elizabeth, Avalanche delivers short, hollow, fast waves when Algoa Bay decides to switch on. It needs a solid NE-SW swell window, 5-6ft minimum to power the reef properly, and performs best at mid tide with a NW offshore cleaning things up. The take-off is over a rock ledge that looks more committing than it is, and the ride finishes in a small cove, so the wave is short but punchy when conditions align. Intermediate surfers will get the most out of it, though experienced beginners can manage on smaller days. An older, relaxed crowd often self-selects here, and weekends see only a few surfers. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: winter swell strongest. Consistency: medium. Note the estuary and river mouth nearby, which raises water quality concerns and, less frequently discussed, can attract Zambezi sharks depending on seasonal river levels.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This spot draws a mellower, older crowd and tends to fly under the radar when the rest of Algoa Bay lights up. Localism is reportedly minimal. Weekends occasionally bring a few extra faces, but hustle in the water is uncommon. Being respectful of the lineup and aware of fishermen's lines casting from the rocks is the main protocol to observe.

Access & Facilities

Follow the road toward Schoenmakerskop from Port Elizabeth and look for the well-signposted Something Good Roadhouse turn-off. The break is visible from the parking area. No dedicated surf parking and no surf facilities on site, but the Summerstrand Surf-Lifesaving Club is at the far end of the lot. Watch fishermen's lines on the rocks. The river mouth raises real water quality flags, swim or paddle with that in mind.

Nearby Alternatives

When Avalanche is flat or the bay is misfiring, the broader Port Elizabeth coastline has beachbreak options at Summerstrand for smaller or less organized swell. Schoenmakerskop itself offers rocky reef alternatives for those willing to explore the headland.
