A slab-like beach break wedge firing next to Port Elizabeth's harbour wall, Fence produces some of the most powerful and hollow waves on the Eastern Cape coast. Swell energy rebounds off the harbour wall and collides with incoming lines, forming a heavy wedging left that can throw serious barrels when conditions align. It needs 5-6ft of swell to wake up and handles 10ft-plus on bigger swells, with high tide the preferred window. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find it rewarding, beginners should stay away from this lineup. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through winter, April to August. Consistency: fickle, requires the right swell angle and size to produce the wedge. The peak can be difficult to read on arrival, so watch a few sets from the wall before paddling out to locate where the rebound and direct swell are meeting.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays you may have the peak to yourself or near enough. On weekends the spot draws a crowd fast, particularly when the wedge is clearly working. Locals know the peak well and will be in position early. Respect the lineup order and don't snake the peak.

Access & Facilities

Reachable via a roughly ten-minute walk along Kings Beach or through the harbour parking area. The harbour entry route carries real personal security risk and is not recommended. Walk from Kings Beach instead. No dedicated facilities at the break itself. Leave nothing visible in your vehicle.

Nearby Alternatives

Kings Beach offers more forgiving peaks when Fence is maxing out or the wedge isn't forming. Pollock Beach to the south is another option in smaller, cleaner swells for surfers looking for less intensity.
