A hollow, powerful rivermouth break sitting where the Kowie River meets the Indian Ocean, Port Alfred delivers punchy, fast waves that can hold surprising size for an Eastern Cape town break. The break responds to swells from 3ft and can handle 10ft-plus on big days, with SE to SSW swells wrapping best into the rivermouth. Offshore winds typically blow from the NW to W, and the wave works across all tides, though the shifting sandbars mean conditions change quickly. Two distinct setups exist here: West Beach, accessed from the Guidos pub car park, and East Beach, reached by swimming across the river mouth. Both peaks can be read from the car park, making it easy to pick your battle before paddling out. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, with autumn and winter swells most consistent. Consistency: moderate to good. Check the bar configuration before committing to East Beach crossing, especially when swell is up.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday and weekend lineups stay relatively light compared to most South African beach breaks. Localism is minimal but the local crew knows the bar shifts, so watch the water before paddling out. A quiet, functional lineup with no major ego pressure reported.

Access & Facilities

Guidos pub on West Beach provides parking and a clear view of both peaks. East Beach requires swimming the river mouth, which carries real current risk when swell and river outflow are running together. Do not underestimate the crossing. Basic food and drink at Guidos. Port Alfred is a small coastal town with fuel, accommodation, and supplies close by.

Nearby Alternatives

Kelly's Beach, just east of town, offers a more sheltered beach break option when the rivermouth is blown out or the bar is dead. Kleinemonde to the west picks up similar swells and can provide a quieter session when Port Alfred is maxing out.
