A wide open beach break at the Goda River mouth, about 25 km southwest of East London where the river meets the Indian Ocean at Winterstrand village. SW to SE swells push through best in the autumn and winter months, with offshore winds from the NW keeping faces clean. Mid tide tends to organise the banks best, and the 3-6ft range is where the sandbar peaks are most consistent. It suits intermediate surfers comfortably, though beginners can find gentler sections near the river mouth on smaller days. The lineup rarely draws heavy crowds, though weekends in summer pull local East London surfers down the coast. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and winter. Consistency: moderate. If the banks are blown out or flat, the stretch has enough length to walk and scout a better peak before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lightweight local scene by Eastern Cape standards. Weekend pressure from East London surfers is real in summer but nothing compared to the J-Bay corridor. Dawn patrol on weekdays in winter is the quietest window. Respect the local crew and give way in the lineup.

Access & Facilities

Follow the R72 coastal road southwest from East London roughly 25 km toward Winterstrand. Minimal facilities on site, so carry water and supplies. The river mouth area is used by families and bathers, so be aware of swimmers on small summer days. No known serious water quality issues but river runoff after heavy rain warrants caution.

Nearby Alternatives

Bosbokstrand sits further along the same coastal stretch and picks up similar swell with potentially more sheltered conditions on big NE wind days. East London's main beachbreaks are 25 km back up the coast if Goda's banks are flat.
