Nahoon Reef throws up thick, ledging right-hand walls over a rock reef on the eastern edge of East London, Eastern Cape. S to SW swells from 4-10ft with a NW wind and low-to-medium tide produce the best conditions, though the spot handles up to 15ft on the outside Reef section. Competent surfers only: deep late take-offs, powerful bowl sections, and active Great White shark activity make this no place for the under-prepared. Bottom: reef/rock. Season: May-August. Consistency: high. Bring a step-up board for solid days and stay alert to the rip that can sweep you north along the reef.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw crowds, but the vibe is genuinely welcoming by South African standards. The lineup self-regulates as size increases, with the rip and shark factor discouraging the uncommitted. Give respect and you will receive it. Everybody in the water is thinking about sharks anyway.

Access & Facilities

A concrete slipway leads out toward the Reef from the car park, protecting feet from urchins in the rocks. On bigger days the rip makes the paddle a serious burn. Camping is available nearby at the Sugar Shack backpackers, which also organises transport to local breaks. Water quality has improved but still carries some odour from residential runoff.

Nearby Alternatives

When Nahoon Reef is too big or sharky, Gonubie Point offers a cleaner right-hand point on E-SE swell about 15km north. Nahoon Corner works the same swell window but suits a wider range of ability and is sheltered from the worst open-ocean energy.
