A horseshoeing right-hand barrel that can rival the best reef breaks in the South Pacific, Coconuts sits off the coast of Lotofagā on Samoa's south shore. It fires best on SW swell at 4-8ft, with a high tide and NE wind to groom the face. The wave pitches hard off the coral, producing quick, hollow sections that demand confident barrel riding and precise positioning. Intermediates with barrel experience will find it manageable on smaller days, but overhead-plus sets turn the wave into something that will punish hesitation. Bottom: coral reef. Season: May-August peak, with shoulders into April and September. Consistency: fickle but rewarding when it aligns. Access is a 5-minute boat ride or a 300-meter paddle, and the lineup stays relatively mellow thanks to a welcoming local vibe, though resort guests can fill the water when it's pumping. Never turn your back on the ocean here, sets can arrive in unexpected lulls and catch you off-guard on the inside.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is generally welcoming and the local vibe is mellow, which is worth respecting. Resort-based surf packages bring a steady flow of guests, so expect moderate crowds when the surf is on. Dawn sessions tend to be quieter. Treat the locals well and the water stays relaxed.

Access & Facilities

Reach the break via a 5-minute boat ride from the shore or a 300-meter paddle. Most surfers access it through local resorts that run boat transfers. The reef is shallow and unforgiving, so reef booties and a helmet are worth considering on bigger days. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When Coconuts is too big or too fickle, Samoa's south shore has a handful of reef setups that pick up similar SW swell. The island's west coast can offer more protection on large or disorganised swells, and a local guide or resort operator will point you toward what's working.
