A long, powerful left-hand point unspools down the eastern flank of the Faja da Caldeira do Santo Cristo on São Jorge's north coast, making it one of the most consequential waves in the Azores. It needs a solid NW-NE swell to engage the rocks but scales to mast-high and beyond. WSW wind is perfect, it handles more W than other fajas in the area. The take-off at the peak is steep and committed, with rideable shoulder further out for intermediates working their way into it. Inside, a large rock creates a hollow, pinching section passable only when the wave is double-overhead or bigger. In smaller conditions expect a rock slalom. Bottom: point over rock and reef. Season: autumn through spring for size, summer for fun shorter rides. Consistency: medium. Strong currents push hard down the point, urchins are present on the entry rocks, and getting in and out at size is a genuine mission.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Rarely crowded given the demanding access and serious wave. The lineup self-selects: the consequences keep numbers low. Intermediate-plus surfers should read the peak carefully before committing. Dawn sessions are worth the early wake-up simply to observe sets before paddling.

Access & Facilities

Access to the faja is on foot or by boat, a significant commitment. There is a car park but no facilities. Bring water, food, and a first-aid kit. Urchin spines are a real risk on rocky entry points, so booties are advisable at any size. Plan tide windows before you go.

Nearby Alternatives

The Left of the Church picks up all available W-N swell at the outer peak and offers fun summer surf when Lago do Linho is too small. The Faja dos Cubres left pointbreak further along the north coast catches a wide swell window and is worth checking when NW energy drops. The south coast has the only regularly surfed SE-W swell option if the north is maxed out.
