A fast, hollow right-hand reef off the NW tip of the Faja da Caldeira do Santo Cristo, Feiticeiras is one of the most intense waves on São Jorge's north coast. It picks up swell from a wide window spanning W through N to E, with SW winds going offshore. The wave peaks over a submerged reef and fires right for up to 200-500m, with a shorter, punchier left on the peak. It works at all tides and handles an absurd size range, from knee-high to legitimate XXL, but when it's on, it is shallow, very fast, and very hollow. Expert-only. The lineup is rarely crowded, but the ocean is unforgiving here. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: year-round. Consistency: high. The wave always looks smaller from the clifftop than it actually is, so commit to your size read before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is rarely busy, which is unsurprising given the access, the commitment required, and the consequence of the wave. Expert surfers only. Read the conditions carefully before entering and know your exit. Disrespecting a wave this heavy with underprepared surfing is a hazard to everyone out.

Access & Facilities

Access involves reaching the faja on foot or via occasional boat, with no facilities on-site. Bring water, food, and a full kit. There is no lifeguard presence and no easy bailout. Despite the raw power of the break, there is typically no strong current, but submerged rocks run close to the surface and require constant awareness.

Nearby Alternatives

When Feiticeiras is too big or too messy, the nearby faja system offers options: Igreja picks up all available W-N swell and has a more forgiving entry on smaller days, while Direta do Passe produces long rides on NE swell. The left at Faja dos Cubres is another north coast option for surfers making the most of a big swell window.
