A freight-train left pointbreak wrapping off the rocks of Faja dos Cubres, widely considered the longest wave in Portugal, on the north coast of São Jorge in the Azores. It needs a solid NW swell, 5ft or bigger, with a SW offshore keeping it clean, the wave is extremely exposed out the back and struggles when swell exceeds triple overhead. Strictly for advanced to expert surfers: the drop is heavy, the sections connect into speed walls and open barrels, and exit through sweeping currents and whitewash against the rocks regularly damages boards and bodies. Bottom: point over rocks. Season: October through March. Consistency: high in winter swells. At smaller sizes the wave breaks uncomfortably close to rocks with boils and exposed dry sections, so low-to-incoming tide with 6ft or bigger is the target window.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are rarely an issue. This is a remote Azorean faja accessible only to those willing to make the journey, and on most winter swells you'll find few surfers out. That said, the wave demands respect from everyone in the water. Locals on São Jorge know the spot well and will point you in the right direction if you ask honestly.

Access & Facilities

No facilities on site. Free parking nearby. Ask any local in São Jorge for Faja dos Cubres. Entry timing through the rocks is manageable if you watch the sets, but the exit is the real hazard: sweeping lateral currents and heavy whitewash make getting out a serious commitment. Bring a board you're willing to ding, and budget time to watch the water before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

São Jorge's north coast holds several other faja breaks within range, including a powerful right that fires off the lagoon opening on NE swell and a longer left running down the eastern flank of Faja da Caldeira do Santo Cristo. When the main peak is maxing out or too rocky at low tide, the south coast spot picks up SE-W swell and offers a more forgiving alternative.
