A fast, barrelling left breaks across the reef shelf off the northern tip of Nusa Island, roughly 5km from Kavieng in Papua New Guinea's New Ireland Province. It needs W to NW swell, ideally 3-8ft, with S quadrant winds to hold the face clean. The wave jacks quickly out of deeper water, bowls through a satisfying mid-section, then turns inside-out over shallow, barely-covered coral on the inside, which demands confident tube-riding and a fast exit. Intermediate to advanced surfers only: the inside section is genuinely punishing and the remoteness adds consequence to mistakes. Bottom: reef. Season: November through April. Consistency: medium. Arrive at mid tide when the inside coral has enough water to survive the occasional wipeout.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Kavieng is remote enough that crowds are rare. Most surfers staying at Nusa Island Retreat access the break by short boat ride. The lineup stays small even in peak season, though the resort model means you may share it with fellow guests. Respect the boat drivers and the community.

Access & Facilities

No beach access, no parking, no facilities on site. Access is by boat from Nusa Island Retreat or similar operator in Kavieng. Water quality is clean. The inside coral is the primary hazard: booties are worth considering and a solid roof over your helmet on bigger days. Bring your own wax and spare legropes.

Nearby Alternatives

When Nusa Lefts is too small or the swell angle is wrong, Nago across the channel picks up N swell more readily and offers more consistent options. Long-Long, a short boat ride away, trades barrels for length of ride when you want walls instead of tubes. Ral is the call when swell is scarce across the whole region.
