One of Kavieng's most consistent reef waves, Nago breaks off the top of a shallow barrier reef surrounding tiny Nago Island in Papua New Guinea's New Ireland Province. NW to N swells are the primary driver, with S to SE winds keeping it clean, best size runs from knee-high up to 8ft, with low to mid tide producing the sharpest sections. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers, and the managed access program keeps the lineup genuinely uncrowded. Bottom: reef. Season: May to October, though forecast services notes a November to February window too. Consistency: high. A short boat ride from Nusa Island Retreat is your access point, and booking through them is the way to go since the local income-sharing program directly funds that low-crowd experience. Sharks and reef contact are the two hazards to respect here.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The local surf management program limits surfer numbers in the area, which means the lineup stays empty even on good days. Locals are welcoming. Respect the system: book through an accredited camp, follow any daily allocation rules, and tip generously. This model works because visiting surfers honor it.

Access & Facilities

Fly to Kavieng, then arrange a short boat transfer to the break. Nusa Island Retreat is the practical hub. There is no parking, no beach facilities, and no paddling in from shore. Bring everything you need for the session. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When Nago is blown out or flat, Long-Long to the SW delivers exactly what its name promises on the right swell. Nusa Lefts at the island's northern reef tip is a shorter hop and works the exposed N end of the barrier. Ral is the longer trip reserve for low-swell days.
