Long-Long earns its name honestly: on a solid NW or W swell with NE to E winds, this outer reef right-hander unspools for 200-500m along the Kavieng coastline in Papua New Guinea. It needs size to wake up, working best from waist-high to double-overhead-plus, and the swell window is specific enough that it stays uncrowded even by PNG standards. When it fires, the wave delivers a deep-water roll-in to a generous, walling face that invites full-commitment carves, top-to-bottom snaps, and the occasional tube section. forecast services describes it as the highest-quality wave in the area, drawing comparisons to Rincon minus the crowd. Intermediate to advanced surfers will feel at home here, though beginners should sit this one out. Bottom: outer reef. Season: November through April. Consistency: medium, fickle in small swells. The honest caveat is that it does not break often, so if you are making the trip, budget extra days for the waiting game.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is welcoming and the lineup is rarely crowded, partly because the fickle conditions filter casual visitors naturally. The vibe is relaxed when surfers are out. Respect the access through Nusa Island Retreat and keep interactions with local boat operators courteous.

Access & Facilities

Access is by short boat ride from Nusa Island Retreat on Nusa Island. No parking, no facilities at the break itself. Bring your own water, wax, and a spare leash. The reef is the main hazard, bouncing off it on a wipeout is a real risk, so a thicker wetsuit vest or rash guard with impact shorts is worth considering. Water quality is clean with no pollution concerns.

Nearby Alternatives

When Long-Long is flat, Nago sits across a short channel and picks up a wider swell range, making it a more consistent fallback on smaller days. Nusa Lefts breaks off the northern tip of the island and is easily reached from the retreat. For a longer hunt, Ral sits in more exposed open ocean and tends to catch swell that the inshore breaks miss entirely.
