Bocas del Toro's only right-hand reefbreak delivers short, violent kegs over a shallow coral ledge on Bastimientos Island. It needs NW to E swell at 8ft-plus to switch on, with surrounding beaches requiring overhead surf before Silverbacks even wakes up. SW winds keep it clean. Tide matters less than size and angle here, but the wave is unforgiving at all stages. Experts only: the shifting peak, air-drop entry, and notoriously long hold-downs punish anyone under-gunned or under-skilled. Bottom: submerged coral reef. Season: Caribbean winter, Nov-Feb. Consistency: medium. Bring a spare board. Silverbacks has a well-documented reputation for snapping equipment on its shallow ledge, and a hold-down here is not a casual experience.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are occasional rather than constant, partly because the wave demands a high skill floor. When a solid NW swell arrives in winter, expect a competitive lineup of experienced local and traveling surfers. Respect the pecking order. This is not a wave to drop in on, and given the consequences, nobody here will be patient about it.

Access & Facilities

Silverbacks sits off Bastimientos Island and is most practically reached by water taxi from Bocas del Toro town. There are no facilities at the break. Bring water, sunscreen, and a backup board. Parking is restricted to boat access. Urchins and shallow coral are the primary hazards on the reef.

Nearby Alternatives

When Silverbacks is too big or too small, First Beach (Wizard Beach) on Bastimientos offers a more forgiving beachbreak. Back toward town, Paunch delivers a quality reef left with a tubular opening section. Bluff, further north, provides consistent hollow beach peaks across a range of sizes.
