A sheltered reef-and-sandbar setup tucked on the far side of the bay from the main peak, Ducks is one of Northern Norway's quieter scoring spots when the summer swell lines up. The northern rim of the bay blocks NE wind, making it rideable when exposed breaks along the coast are blown out. Optimal conditions run 3-8ft, mid tide, with a SW to W swell direction pushing into the bay's opening. It suits experienced surfers comfortable reading reef entries and committing to less-mapped lineups. Bottom: mixed reef and sandbar. Season: summer months, June through August. Consistency: low to moderate, swell-dependent. Sharks have been reported in the area, so stay alert and avoid surfing alone or at dawn and dusk when activity increases.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays you can expect an empty lineup. Weekends bring a handful of surfers at most. Northern Norway's surf community is small and tight-knit, so respect the lineup, wait your turn, and don't drop in. The isolation naturally filters the crowd, but that same isolation means no one to help if things go wrong.

Access & Facilities

The spot sits across the bay from the main break. Access involves navigating to the seals side of the bay. No facilities on site. Pack water, food, and a repair kit. Water temperatures in Northern Norway demand a 5/4mm wetsuit minimum, with hood and booties year-round.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ducks is flat or the angle is wrong, the main bay peak is the obvious fallback and catches more swell. Other exposed reef setups along the Lofoten and Vesterålen coastline can fire on the same SW groundswell if you're willing to drive.
