A beach-break peak on the Gulf of Mexico coast near Tampico, Escolleras punches above its weight for a gulf setup, delivering powerful, punchy A-frames when the conditions align. Two distinct swell windows keep it in play across much of the year: winter and fall cold fronts push N-NW groundswell that regularly hits 6ft, while spring and early summer bring south wind-swell to fill the gaps, producing 2-4ft surf that is smaller but still rideable. Mid tide is the sweet spot, low tide can expose the sandbars awkwardly and high tide tends to flatten the punch. Weekdays see a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, but weekends draw heavy crowds from Tampico, fifteen minutes away, so dawn patrol is essential if you want uncrowded peaks. Bottom: sand. Season: October to April for prime NW swell, spring shoulder for south wind-swell. Consistency: above average for the Gulf. Locals are welcoming as long as you show respect, keep the beach clean, and rent shade from local vendors.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions are genuinely mellow with few surfers in the water. Weekends flip the script hard: Tampico's surf community descends and the lineup becomes ultra-competitive. Locals are friendly if you reciprocate respect. Keep the beach clean, don't drop in, and renting a local shade umbrella is a small gesture that goes a long way.

Access & Facilities

Tampico city is roughly fifteen minutes from the break, with accommodation options both in town and directly on the beach. Food, water, and shade rentals are available locally. The Gulf coast road gives straightforward vehicle access. Watch for rip currents on bigger NW swells as the jetties nearby can accelerate water movement.

Nearby Alternatives

When Escolleras is blown out or maxed, the broader Veracruz coastline offers other beach-break options that respond to similar swell windows. Checking conditions at spots a short drive north or south can reward flexible surfers during fickle spring periods.
