A hollow left that only reveals itself a handful of times each year, Costalitos fires in front of a jetty on Veracruz's urban waterfront when a significant norte or hurricane swell rolls in from the Gulf. It needs N to NE swell, 3-8ft, to trigger, and works best at mid to high tide with light offshore winds. The wave breaks fast off a sand-sculpted jetty formation, delivering a punchy barrel section at takeoff before opening into a short but workable wall. The name translates loosely to "boulder," a nod to the jetty structure that shapes the break. Access is straightforward: the spot sits directly in front of the Holiday Inn and Plaza las Américas on Boulevard Manuel Ávila Camacho, with stairs from the boulevard to the beach. This is a fickle, event-driven wave. At 3-5ft it gives fast open-faced rides, push it to 6-8ft under the right storm conditions and the barrel section becomes legit. Bottom: sand over structure. Season: norte and hurricane season, roughly October through February. Consistency: low, 3-5 sessions per year in good years.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see a small, tight-knit local crew. Veracruz's surf community is not large, and most people in the water know each other. When a good swell arrives, word spreads fast and the lineup fills up quickly. Respect in the water here is transactional: give it and you'll likely get it back. Visitors who show respect have reportedly been pointed toward other regional breaks.

Access & Facilities

Park along Boulevard Manuel Ávila Camacho and use the stairs down to the beach. The Holiday Inn and Plaza las Américas are your landmarks. Urban location means food, water, and accommodation are within walking distance. No rental infrastructure at the break itself.

Nearby Alternatives

When Costalitos isn't working, the greater Veracruz coastline holds other sand and jetty setups that respond to similar Gulf swell windows. Check surrounding beachbreaks along the boulevard for smaller-day alternatives when the swell isn't quite enough to trigger the main peak.
