Cozumel's windward coast delivers a raw, honest beach break at Punta Morena, where E and SE swells hit the island's eastern shore with consistent punch. The wave works best on E to SE swell from 3ft to overhead-plus, and an offshore or light W wind cleans things up considerably. A rocky point outcropping splits the peak, offering both right and left options depending on swell angle and tide. This is a spot for all skill levels when it's small, but when it starts hitting 4ft and above the shore break folds heavy, the inside bar walls up quickly, and you need to time your paddle-out with care. Bottom is a sand and rock mix. Season runs with Atlantic swell activity, most reliably Oct through Feb. Very consistent for a Caribbean spot, logging around 150 surfable days per year. Bring a longer board, 8ft or above, to ease the paddle through the first break and get into the slower outside sets before the reform section rushes inside.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Hardly anyone out here. The east coast of Cozumel sees minimal surf development and almost no local surfing culture, which means the lineup is typically empty even on good days. No localism pressure reported. The tradeoff is equally minimal infrastructure and zero coaching or emergency support if things go sideways.

Access & Facilities

Park at the Punta Morena Bar and Grill on the east coast road. Board rentals are available at the site. Walk north along the beach and paddle out past the shore break. Water quality is generally clean given low development density. Main hazards are the heavy shore break on bigger swells and scattered rocks on the inside. No hospitals or lifeguards nearby, so surf within your limits.

Nearby Alternatives

If the swell is too large or the paddle-out looks unmanageable, the calmer western (leeward) side of Cozumel offers flat water and a complete change of pace for snorkeling. On the east coast, other small beach sections north and south of Punta Morena can offer slightly different exposure depending on swell angle.
