A rarely surfed beach break on Cozumel's exposed eastern shore, Playa Bonita catches swell that most of the island completely misses. Easterly and SE swells wrap into a modest barb along the otherwise straight coastline, producing both lefts and rights that work best on W to NW winds at waist to overhead-plus size. All tides produce rideable waves, though the spot can get shallow on the inside, so watch your feet near the scattered coral heads. Open to everyone from beginners to advanced surfers, the lineup is consistently empty even on weekends. Bottom: sand with occasional coral heads. Season: August through November, hurricane season. Consistency: low to moderate, needs sustained onshore or nearby tropical energy to fire. Your best bet is arriving during or just after a multi-day E or SE swell window when the rest of Cozumel is churned up and blown out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This spot is empty year-round. The occasional craft merchants on the cliffside are genuinely welcoming and have been known to cheer surfers on. No localism issues to speak of. If you find it busy, something is very wrong or there is a significant swell running and word has spread.

Access & Facilities

From San Miguel, take the mid-island highway and head south along the eastern coast. Look for the Playa Bonita sign. Parking is along the highway, but the descent to the beach involves stepping stones, which gets awkward with boards and gear. No facilities on site. Bring water and food. The main hazard beyond shallow coral is the powerful shore break: never turn your back to the ocean.

Nearby Alternatives

If Playa Bonita is too small or the swell window is wrong, check other spots along Cozumel's eastern shore where the same E and SE energy hits. Cancun and the mainland coast pick up different swell angles and may be firing when Cozumel is flat.
