Chac Mool delivers punchy beach break peaks right in Cancun's hotel zone, offering lefts and rights over shallow sand when conditions align. NE, E, or SE swells in the waist-to-head-high range are the target, with W winds going offshore to clean things up and produce the occasional snappy barrel. It suits all levels from beginners to advanced surfers, though the moderate crowd includes plenty of swimmers and bodyboarders who compete for the same water. Bottom: Sand. Season: August to October. Consistency: Moderate, tied to tropical storm and hurricane activity. Time your sessions at dawn before the beach fills up, and stay alert in the lineup as non-surfers drift into your line without warning. The Caribbean water runs warm year-round, so boardies or a thin 2mm top are all you need even in the cooler months, making this a low-commitment surf check when everything else is flat.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is manageable but the lineup has its own friction: a constant mix of bodyboarders, swimmers, and skimmers share the break. Priority is informal and collisions are a real risk. Dawn patrol sessions sidestep most of the chaos. Local surfers hold their own but the vibe is generally tolerable rather than territorial.

Access & Facilities

Direct beach access from the Cancun hotel strip makes this one of the easiest checks in Mexico. Parking, food, and water are all steps away. Water quality is clean. No paddle-out tricks needed, walk in from the shore and you're there.

Nearby Alternatives

If Chac Mool is too crowded or the bank is blown out, other beach breaks along Cancun's Zona Hotelera occasionally offer cleaner peaks depending on swell angle. Puerto Morelos to the south picks up similar E and NE swell energy on a reef setup and is worth the short drive when size is up.
