A thick, high-tide barrel breaking over submerged reef on the east side of a deep bay, Short Ledge is one of several expert-grade reef setups scattered across the remote northern Maluku chain. It demands N to E swell in the 2-6ft range, with southerly winds keeping faces clean. The wave is short, punchy, and unforgiving, suited to experienced surfers comfortable reading fast reef sections with minimal crowd support. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: north monsoon window, roughly Nov-Mar. Consistency: medium. Boat access is the practical reality here, and the bay's good anchorage means it fits naturally into a liveaboard or charter itinerary. Bring a dedicated barrel board and check the lineup thoroughly before committing to your first wave.
Solo sessions are realistic here given the remoteness of northern Maluku. The few surfers who reach Short Ledge typically arrive by charter boat, so the lineup rarely sees pressure. Respect the local maritime community and the other surfers on your vessel.
No road access, no parking, no facilities. Boat is the only viable option, and the deep-water bay anchorage is well-suited for liveaboards. Bring everything you need including first aid, reef booties, and ample fresh water.
Tanjung Padang offers long, fast rights over reef and is a natural companion stop on the same stretch. Nachos is a more forgiving option when Short Ledge is too consequential. Sopi bay to the north picks up consistent north monsoon swell and has additional reef setups worth exploring.
