A submerged reef left in the remote north of Halmahera, Double Dome draws a handful of visiting surfers willing to make the long overland haul from Tobelo, plus local riders on village-shaped wooden planks. The wave breaks down an angled reef toward town and runs best on N to E swell in the 2-8ft range, going offshore in westerlies. All tides work here, though consistency sits at medium, so expect waiting. The wave suits beginners and intermediates, and the crowd is rarely an issue this far from any surf infrastructure. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: north monsoon window. Consistency: medium. Bring your own water, food, and supplies since there are zero facilities and no formal parking at the break. The remoteness and lack of facilities mean serious self-sufficiency is mandatory before committing to the trip.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are rare by any measure. The long overland journey from Tobelo filters out most visiting surfers, leaving the lineup largely to local riders and the occasional adventurous traveler. Treat the local surf community with respect and share waves generously.

Access & Facilities

No parking, no facilities, no food or water on site. Access requires significant overland travel from Tobelo. Pack everything you need for the session and then some. This is genuine expedition territory in Maluku, so factor in logistics carefully before heading out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Double Dome is flat or the swell angle is wrong, the broader Halmahera coast holds a range of options. Tobelo-area reefs and the Loloda Utara islands offer lefts and rights for different swell windows. The northwest arm of Halmahera has several breaks worth checking if you have transport sorted.
