A savage left-hander breaks over submerged reef at Coconut Swing, tucked among the Loloda Utara islands off northern Halmahera in Maluku, Indonesia. It needs N to E swell, NW offshore winds, and works across all tides in the 2-6ft range, though only a fraction of waves are genuinely rideable. This is an expert-only proposition: the reef is unforgiving, the lineup is remote, and you may surf alone for days. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: north monsoon window. Consistency: medium. Bring a versatile quiver and accept that patience is part of the deal here, because the ratio of watching to surfing is high even on good days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Solo crowds are the norm here. The Loloda Utara island chain is genuinely remote, accessed by boat, and draws almost no visiting surfers. No meaningful localism pressure exists, but that isolation cuts both ways: if you get hurt, help is far away. Respect the few locals who know this reef.

Access & Facilities

No parking, no facilities. Boat access only, navigating the Loloda Utara island group. The nearest supply point is a significant distance by sea. Bring all food, water, first aid, and fuel. No hospitals nearby. A liveaboard or well-provisioned charter is the only practical approach.

Nearby Alternatives

When Coconut Swing is misbehaving, the broader Loloda Utara chain offers multiple reef setups worth exploring. Further south along Halmahera's northwest arm, Ollie's Island delivers cultured lefts, and the Tobelo Islands pick up the same NE-to-E swell on several reef setups offering both lefts and rights.
