One of Florianópolis's most coveted right-handers, Praia do Forte is a point break on the island's north coast that only fires under a specific swell recipe. It needs a solid E swell of 1.5m or more to wake up, though a consistent NE component reduces that threshold slightly. NE swells are rare on the island, and large E swells don't show often either, making the right combination an event. Offshore winds are essential to keep the face clean. Low to mid tide is the window. The wave itself opens with a tubular drop before walling into a long right that strings sections together for performance surfing. When conditions align, rides extend into the 300-500m range. The wave suits intermediate to advanced surfers, and on those rare working days the lineup goes ultra-crowded fast. Bottom: point reef. Season: E and NE swell events, primarily autumn and winter. Consistency: low, but high reward when it clicks. Get there early on any swell forecast that fits the recipe.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Ultra-crowded on weekdays and weekends alike when it's on. Because the spot fires so rarely, every surfer on the island shows up at once. The local knowledge gap is real. Give priority in the peak, read the pecking order, and don't paddle into sets you haven't earned. Dawn patrol on the first day of a swell gives the best ratio of crowd to quality.

Access & Facilities

About 18km north of central Florianópolis, past the left point of Jurerê Internacional. Basic access from the coastal road. No dedicated surf infrastructure on-site. Bring your own water and wax. Check surf forecasts the night before and plan to arrive before sunrise on a working swell day.

Nearby Alternatives

If Praia do Forte isn't firing, Ponta das Canas further north shares a similar E-swell requirement and can be checked on the same run. Jurerê Internacional offers a more forgiving beach break option when the point is flat.
