A punchy beach break on the north shore of Santa Catarina Island, Praia Brava delivers scattered peaks across the whole beach with one standout left at the far northern end that gets genuinely hollow when the swell lines up. SW to SE swells from 3ft push workable peaks through the beach, the far-left section needs a bit more size, ideally 4ft-plus, to throw properly. Offshore winds from the W to NW clean things up. Mid-skill and above will get the most out of the speed and occasional lip here. Weekdays stay quiet, but summer brings heavy foot traffic and Argentine holiday crowds that push the lineup to uncomfortable levels. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and winter (April through September) offer cleaner, less crowded conditions. Consistency: moderate. Dawn patrol in the off-season is your best bet to score the hollow left section without the hassle.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday crowds are thin and sessions can be near-empty. Summer weekends, particularly January and February, draw heavy crowds of holidaymakers and visiting Argentine surfers. The lineup gets competitive at the better peaks. Being assertive is necessary to get waves in peak season.

Access & Facilities

Head to the north shore of Santa Catarina Island via Canasvieiras, then continue through Cachoeira do Bom Jesus and Lagoinha until you reach Praia Brava. Expect significant traffic delays in summer. Basic amenities available nearby.

Nearby Alternatives

Lagoinha, just back down the coast, offers a mellower beach-break option when Brava is saturated. Praia do Moçambique on the island's east coast picks up more direct SE swell and can be a useful alternative when the north shore is flat or overcrowded.
