Gulf Coast surfing rarely offers much, but Fourchon delivers when a cold front pushes south across Louisiana, generating short-period wind swell that hits the jetties and sandbars near the mouth of Bayou Lafourche. S to SE swell in the 2-6ft range is the sweet spot, with N winds cleaning things up after a front passes. The Gulf's shallow shelf means waves arrive lumpy and close together, so sessions tend to be punchy and brief rather than long and lined up. This is a spot for locals and curious Gulf surfers, not traveling wave hunters. Bottom: sandbar with jetty influence. Season: late fall through early spring. Consistency: low, front-dependent. A 4x4 helps reaching the better sandbars east of the jetties, and watch tide levels carefully since a rising tide has swallowed vehicles here before.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The Community reports consistently list this spot as empty on weekdays and weekends. Gulf surfers here tend to be self-selecting, stoked just to find rideable waves in Louisiana. Localism is not a reported factor, but the surf community is small and tight. Respect the fact that these folks deal with rare surf windows.

Access & Facilities

Access is via Port of Fourchon, south of Galliano. The road to the beach may require a 4x4 depending on conditions. No formal surf facilities. Park well above the tide line as rising water has claimed vehicles. Grand Isle State Park, a short drive east, offers a pier break with cleaner conditions and $2 parking when Fourchon is blown out.

Nearby Alternatives

Grand Isle pier is the most consistent nearby alternative, offering cleaner, more organized surf during and after fronts. The barrier island beach at Grand Isle State Park also picks up the same S and SE swells and is worth checking if Fourchon's sandbars are uncooperative.
