Sandbars dropping from 20-30ft of water onto 2-3ft of sand create remarkably powerful, hollow beach-break peaks across this remote barrier island chain in the northern Gulf of Mexico, roughly 25-40 miles offshore Louisiana. SW to SE Gulf swells, ideally 3-8ft, combined with any offshore N or NW wind produce long, fast walls running 150-500m on good days. Access is boat-only from Venice or Hopedale, a 40-90 minute run each way, which keeps crowds to near-zero even on firing days. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most reward here, though the isolation, serious shark presence, and distance from medical care demand honest self-assessment before the trip. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Check the forecast obsessively before committing to the boat ride, and bring everything you need because there is nothing out here.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the emptiest surf lineups in the continental US. The logistics filter out 99% of surfers. Those who do make the trip tend to be respectful of the unspoken code: don't broadcast specific breaks, don't post GPS pins, don't expose what locals and regulars have worked to protect. Keep it quiet.

Access & Facilities

Boat or floatplane access only. Primary launches: Venice (Cypress Cove Marina, Venice Marina) and Hopedale (Breton Sound Marina), each roughly 40-90 minutes offshore depending on vessel speed and conditions. The islands are a federally protected national wildlife refuge, no camping permitted. Bring all food, water, sun protection, and first aid. Insect repellent is essential. Bull sharks and tiger sharks are a genuine, documented hazard. Nearest hospital is a long boat ride and drive away.

Nearby Alternatives

When the Gulf is flat or conditions don't justify the trip, the Louisiana coast offers far more accessible, if humbler, surf at Grand Isle Pier and Jetty, Holly Beach, or the Southwest Pass jetties at the Mississippi River mouth. None match the Chandeleurs on a real swell day, but they require zero boat logistics.
