A south swell magnet tucked inside Cape Henlopen State Park, Gordons Pond sits five minutes from Rehoboth Beach and punches harder than most visitors expect. Best swell window runs E through S (roughly 90-180 degrees), with W winds cleaning it up. Works on all tides and can hold well-overhead hurricane surf from September through December. This is a beachbreak with stumpy bottom surprises, so intermediate to advanced surfers will get the most from it, expect steep, late drops and quick tube sections rather than long open faces. Crowds are minimal by Delaware standards, and the local vibe is welcoming. Bottom: Sand with submerged stumps. Season: Sep-Dec. Consistency: moderate, S swell dependent. State Park entry runs $5 for Delaware plates, $10 for out-of-state. Watch for rips, debris, and sea lice, especially during summer warmth.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup is mellow and welcoming, this is not a spot where you'll encounter heavy local pressure. Crowds thin further in autumn when the wave is at its best. Dawn patrol in September or October during a post-hurricane swell is about as good as Delaware gets with minimal company.

Access & Facilities

Enter via Cape Henlopen State Park, open year-round 8am to sunset. Fee applies at the gate. Parking is straightforward inside the park. No surf rentals on-site, so bring your own equipment. Water quality is clean, passing quality tests historically over 95% of the time. Watch for rips on bigger days and sea lice during summer.

Nearby Alternatives

When Gordons Pond is too small or blown out, Naval Jetties to the north offers longer right-hand walls and better consistency on a wider swell window. Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach provide more beginner-friendly options a short drive south.
