Old beach groins along Bethany's mile-long boardwalk create sandbars that punch above their weight, producing genuine chest-high to overhead peaks when S and SE swells arrive from tropical systems or nor'easters. Best windows are fall and winter, when storm swell runs without the summer surfing restrictions that shut the lineup down mid-season. SW and W winds groom conditions, low and incoming tide typically shapes the best sections. Suitable for all skill levels, and the crowd is moderate at worst, with a famously welcoming local vibe rare for the mid-Atlantic. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through winter. Consistency: storm-dependent, fickle outside swell events. Pack a 4/3 or thicker for winter sessions and a fish or longboard for the smaller, mushier days between systems.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals are welcoming and the vibe is relaxed. Summer weekends bring tourist crowds plus surf restrictions, so avoiding July and August is the pragmatic call. Dawn patrol in shoulder season gives you the best shot at uncrowded peaks with morning offshores.

Access & Facilities

Parking is pay-or-permit from May 15 to September 15, it's free the rest of the year, which conveniently aligns with the better surf windows. The boardwalk provides easy beach access with food, water, and rentals close by. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

Indian River Inlet, a few miles south, offers a more powerful and consistent sandsbar setup that works on similar S and SE swell windows. Dewey Beach to the north picks up a touch more swell exposure and has its own groin-assisted sandbars worth checking on the same run.
