A powerful reef break accessible only by boat from Sitka, Shoals Reef/Wall delivers hollow, fast barrels across two distinct peaks in one of the most remote lineups in North America. Optimal swell runs from the NW to SW, 4-8ft, and the break responds best at low tide when the reef properly organizes the energy into defined lefts and rights. On bigger days the wave holds well past 12ft, pushing into legitimate big-wave territory. Crowd pressure is essentially zero, though that remoteness comes with real hazards: Stellar sea lions, bears on the shore, and Orcas in the channel are not folklore. Bottom: reef. Season: fall through winter. Consistency: low to moderate given boat-access logistics and Alaska weather windows. The two-peak setup means you can find a right or left depending on the day, but come prepared with a step-up board and full cold-water rubber because the North Pacific does not forgive under-preparation.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Empty on weekdays and weekends alike. The boat-access requirement and extreme remoteness eliminate casual crowd pressure entirely. That said, the handful of surfers who make the effort know this wave well. Respect the effort everyone makes to be here.

Access & Facilities

Boat only, departing from Sitka. There are no facilities on site. Pack food, water, dry bags, and emergency supplies. The boat ride exposes you to open North Pacific conditions. Budget a full day minimum. Water temperatures demand a 5/4 or 6/5 wetsuit, hood, booties, and gloves year-round.

Nearby Alternatives

Sitka Sound and the surrounding archipelago hold additional point and reef setups worth scouting on layover days when wind or swell direction kills Shoals. Some of the documented photos for this spot include a nearby point break, which may be worth investigating if the reef is not cooperating.
