A right-hand reef break sitting beneath the snow-capped silhouette of Mt Edgecumbe, Neva Bay delivers quality waves on the west-facing coast of Kruzof Island, roughly an hour by boat from Sitka. The wave works on SW to W swell, needs an easterly wind to clean up, and rides across all tides, though the right mix of size and tide height separates a good day from a great one. Optimal size runs 2-8ft, with the reef producing longer walls as swell pushes toward the upper end. Expert-level surfing is expected here as the submerged reef, cold Alaskan water, and complete absence of facilities demand full self-sufficiency. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: fall through winter. Consistency: medium. Bring a thick wetsuit, a step-up board for the bigger days, and enough provisions for a full day on the water since there is nothing out here but ocean, volcano views, and waves.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect to surf alone or near-solo. The logistics of reaching Kruzof Island by boat filter out all but committed surfers. There is no localism tension in the traditional sense, but the isolation means any incident is yours to handle. Go with experienced partners who know the area.

Access & Facilities

No road access, no parking, no facilities of any kind. Neva Bay requires a boat trip of approximately one hour from Sitka. Plan for self-sufficiency: food, water, first aid, emergency communication, and cold-water gear. Water temps demand a 5/4mm wetsuit minimum, with booties and hood recommended for most of the year.

Nearby Alternatives

Kai's Place offers a rocky left nearby, and Red Tree Reef is a peak that activates on bigger SW swell. When conditions are right across the area, Shoals Reef to the south is worth checking and handles similar swell windows with reasonable consistency.
