A fast, steep beach break on Alabama's Gulf Coast, Spuds sits inside a state park stretch that keeps the crowds thin even on weekends. SW to SE groundswell, typically 3-8ft, activates the sandbar best at mid to high tide when the drop steepens noticeably. On head-high days it's genuinely fun for a wide range of surfers, punchy peaks with short but satisfying rides. Push it to double-overhead and the lip gets heavy, the drop demands commitment, and a strong rip toward the jetty becomes a real hazard. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through fall hurricane swell, occasional winter NW groundswell. Consistency: low to moderate, Gulf windows are brief. Go with at least one other surfer on bigger days, the current near the jetty is not a joke and there's no lifeguard to notice if things go wrong. Parking is straightforward at the state park lot directly in front of the break, restrooms are on site, and access is easy year-round.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

State park access keeps the vibe mellow and the crowd minimal, even on weekends. No significant localism reported. The bigger crowd-management issue is the break itself on large days, not other surfers. Dawn patrol on the best Gulf swell windows will guarantee near-solitude.

Access & Facilities

State park parking lot sits directly in front of the break. Restrooms on site. No surf rentals reported at this location. Water quality is generally acceptable but check after heavy rainfall, Gulf Coast runoff can spike bacteria counts near jetty structures.

Nearby Alternatives

Alabama Point, a short drive away, offers a more consistent peak and a longer wall on small to medium days. When Spuds is too small or the bar is off, Perdido Pass area picks up the same swell windows and may have a better-shaped option depending on recent sand movement.
