A breakwater-assisted beachbreak at Orange Beach that coaxes the most out of an otherwise starved coastline, Alabama Point sits near the Perdido Pass bridge on Alabama's Gulf shore. The Gulf's limited swell window means waves rarely arrive without a push: SE windswell or, better, a tropical system are the engines here, with faces reaching six feet on the best days. N winds clean it up. Any rideable swell is worth surfing regardless of tide, a rare luxury that forecast services sums up as "surf it into the ground, tide be damned." This suits all skill levels on normal days, though a serious hurricane swell will pull sharper surfers down from the Florida Panhandle. Bottom: sand. Season: September to March. Consistency: fickle, requires significant swell input. Avoid after heavy rain or oil-spill advisories given the Gulf's documented water quality issues.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are quiet. Weekends draw crowds when a swell shows, partly because options elsewhere on the Alabama coast are so limited. The lineup is genuinely welcoming. Panhandle rippers may appear for the biggest swells but there is no localism to speak of.

Access & Facilities

Free parking on the west side of the Perdido Pass bridge on Hwy 182, roughly two miles west of the Florida-Alabama state line. Follow the seawall and jetty down to the break. Watch for sharks, jellyfish, and post-storm pollution. Water quality has historically failed standards more than 40% of the time.

Nearby Alternatives

When Alabama Point is flat, the Florida Panhandle just east offers marginally better swell exposure at spots around Pensacola Beach. Offshore tropical systems occasionally activate breaks further east along the Emerald Coast.
