A reliable beach break on Taiwan's northeast coast, Wai Ao sits between Daxi and Wushi in Yilan County, punching above its weight when northeast swells funnel into the bay. Optimal conditions are NE swell at 3-6ft, offshore winds from the SW, and a low to mid tide that keeps the banks from closing out. The wave suits all skill levels and stays surprisingly uncrowded even on weekends, making it a solid option when busier Yilan breaks get congested. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through winter, when NE monsoon swells peak. Consistency: moderate to good during swell season. Access is straightforward: a one-hour train ride from Taipei station drops you near the beach, with parking opposite the station for those driving from the city.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday and weekend crowd levels are reported as light. Localism is not a notable issue here. That said, the break is a public beach drawing Taipei day-trippers on long weekends, so busy holidays can push numbers up. Dawn patrol sessions will always be quieter.

Access & Facilities

Train from Taipei Main Station to Wai-ao takes roughly one hour on the Yilan line. There is a car park directly across from the station for drivers. The beach is public with basic facilities nearby. No significant entry hazards reported, though rips can form on bigger swells as they do at any beach break.

Nearby Alternatives

Daxi, just up the coast, offers a longer, more consistent stretch of beach break peaks and is worth checking if Wai Ao is flat or choppy. Wushi harbor mouth can also produce cleaner surf when the wind shifts.
