A long, exposed Atlantic beach between Conil de la Frontera and Cape Trafalgar, El Palmar punches above its weight for southwest Spain, delivering powerful, hollow peaks that fire on NW to W swells. Best at waist-high to double overhead, it needs a light E or NE offshores to clean up the face. Mid tide produces the best shape, though forecast services notes it can work across the tidal range. Weekdays keep competition manageable, weekends draw proper crowds to the main peaks. Bottom: sandbanks. Season: October to March. Consistency: reliable through autumn and winter swells. One honest note: past beach-replenishment work introduced coarser sand that affected shape on smaller swells and exposed more rock than before, so scout the banks before you paddle out and watch for rips and longshore drift when swell builds.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Main peaks fill up fast on weekends and when the swell is pumping. Locals are competitive but approachable on the right day. Quieter sandbars along the stretch offer relief from the main peak pressure. Dawn patrol is the obvious move on busy days.

Access & Facilities

Beachfront parking sits just behind the dunes. El Palmar village has cafes and basic facilities. Cadiz is 35km north for full resupply. Watch for rips and longshore drift as swell increases, and check for exposed rocks near the sandbanks, a legacy of past beach replenishment.

Nearby Alternatives

Cape Trafalgar to the south and the broader Conil coastline offer additional beach peaks when El Palmar's banks aren't cooperating. Tarifa, roughly an hour south, opens up a different swell and wind window if the levante is blowing too hard.
