A sand-bottom jetty wave on Portugal's central coast, Cabedelo delivers one of the most consistent setups in the region when the conditions align. The key is sand: a solid winter storm needs to bank the sand tight against the jetty before the signature right starts roping alongside it, offering a punchy tube section on takeoff and a long wall for performance surfing. NW, W, and SW swells are all in play, with E or NE winds cleaning it up. Best from waist-high to double overhead, and best from low tide pushing toward mid. The break suits all levels when small, though the locals know it well and are not shy about letting you know that. Bottom: sand. Season: September to May. Consistency: high in autumn and winter, patchy in spring and summer when the sand spreads out. Come at dawn on a weekday to avoid the crowd and give the rip a chance to do its job.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Cabedelo is popular and earns it. Expect company on weekdays and a full lineup on weekends. Locals know exactly where to sit and will paddle inside you or call you off waves without hesitation. Respect the pecking order, read the rip before paddling out, and take your extra waves somewhere else. Dawn sessions mid-week are your best angle.

Access & Facilities

Park by the groyne or south near the hospital. The rip alongside the jetty makes the paddle-out straightforward when you find the channel. Water quality is a real concern: the river discharges raw sewage and the reputation for poor water is well-earned. After heavy rain especially, think twice about going in. Facilities are basic, the town of Figueira da Foz has food and supplies nearby.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cabedelo's sand is not cooperating, the beachbreaks north of town stay consistent and catch more swell. Scattered peaks south of the jetty work during the flatter months and handle smaller swells well.
