A bowly, punchy left-hand reef on the Alentejo coast, Cogumelo sits just outside the town of Vila Nova de Milfontes and needs a proper swell to show its teeth. SW to N swells in the 2-8ft range are the target, with easterly winds keeping faces clean. It works across all tides, though it rewards patience as consistency sits at medium. Intermediate surfers are the sweet spot here. The lineup is rarely crowded, which is one of the better reasons to make the drive up this quiet stretch of Portuguese coast. Bottom: reef. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: medium. Be aware that the nearby estuary introduces river pollution after heavy rain, so check water quality before paddling out. Adjacent to Cogumelo is a shallower slab-style left reef that is hollow and inconsistent, and a long rivermouth left worth hunting on bigger swells for longboarders and plank riders.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is not a reported issue at Cogumelo. The lineup is genuinely quiet by Portuguese standards. Vila Nova de Milfontes draws more beach visitors than dedicated surfers, so even on working swells the peak stays manageable. Midweek sessions in autumn or winter will see you sharing it with very few people.

Access & Facilities

There is a car park serving the break, and camping facilities are available nearby, making this a solid basecamp option for a longer Alentejo surf trip. Vila Nova de Milfontes has food, water, and accommodation. Post-rain sessions should be avoided due to estuary pollution from the Mira river mouth.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cogumelo is too small or the slab next door is closing out, the beach stretching north of Milfontes offers more consistent sandbars and picks up swell more reliably. Further south along the Alentejo coast, additional reef and beach options emerge for surfers willing to explore on foot.
