A hollow, fun reef break sitting about 30km off the north coast of Vanua Levu in Fiji's far north, Rangs rewards the effort of getting there with empty lineups and a wave that punches well above its remote profile. It needs a solid swell to wake up, starting to show at 3-5ft and holding through 10ft-plus, making it a genuinely versatile option when the ocean is firing. Mid to high tide keeps the wave honest, low tide likely exposes the reef and kills the shape. Surfers of all levels can find something here, but the hollow sections will suit intermediates and above when size builds. Bottom: reef. Season: April through October for Southern Hemisphere groundswells. Consistency: low due to remote access. Bring more fins than you think you need and a quiver covering small to overhead-plus, because resupply is not an option once you're out there.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Reported consistently empty on both weekdays and weekends. The 30km boat ride from Labasa acts as a near-perfect crowd filter. Expect to share the lineup with no one, or the few crew who committed to the same charter. Respect the local villages in the area and follow standard Fiji protocols: a sevusevu ceremony when appropriate is good form.

Access & Facilities

Fly into Nadi, connect to Savusavu, then take a bus to Labasa. From Labasa you need to organise a private boat, roughly a 30-minute run to the break. No facilities at the break. Pack everything: water, food, sunscreen, first aid, and spare equipment. Water quality appears clean given the remote location, but reef cuts here are far from medical help.

Nearby Alternatives

If Rangs isn't breaking, the Savusavu area has a handful of reef setups that work on similar swell windows. The broader Vanua Levu coastline is underexplored and worth a dedicated charter to scout alternatives when the primary swell direction isn't cooperating.
