A punchy, fast beach break on the south shore of Fire Island, Ocean Beach delivers hollow peaks that can surprise you with their power when a solid NE or SE swell fills in. Optimal conditions are SW to NW offshore winds, low to mid tide, and swell in the 3-6ft range. At size, expect short, sharp walls with genuine punch and the occasional barrel section before the wave closes out quickly. The shore entry over sharp, slippery rocks demands respect, especially in heavier surf, and strong rip currents run regularly along this stretch. Intermediate surfers will find it manageable in the 3-4ft range, when it pushes toward 6ft it earns its reputation for power and consequence. Bottom: sand over rock. Season: late summer through late fall. Consistency: moderate. Come at dawn on a falling tide with a NW wind and you'll have the best shot at clean, uncrowded conditions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays and weekends both run light crowd levels, which is one of the genuine draws here. Local surfers are generally relaxed, but treating the lineup with respect is the baseline anywhere. Dawn patrol further reduces any pressure.

Access & Facilities

Access requires the Fire Island Ferry from Bay Shore or a private boat. No cars on the island. Rocky shore entry is the main hazard, especially in swell above head-high. Skid-resistant boots are worth packing. Basic services available in Ocean Beach village.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ocean Beach is maxed out or the current is unworkable, the stretch of barrier island beaches toward Kismet and Saltaire offers similar beach break setups with slightly more shelter. Long Island's South Shore picks up the same swells, so spots like Gilgo and Lido Beach are worth checking if the ferry isn't running.
